MEDICAL WORKSHOP

Medical Workshop

A Visit To The Doctor

Here are Dr Diana Lai (left) and

Justine Phua, 1st Year Medical student.

Both are former students of Tadika Lagenda. :D

Our children greet Dr Diana and Justine with a cheery song :

5 Little Monkeys ... jumping on the bed

One fell off and bumped his head

Mama called the Doctor and the Doctor said,

"No - more - jumping - on - the - bed!"

The children are all very excited and are waiting eagerly

for the workshop to begin.

Hold up your doctor's kit, children ...

Patient No. 1 : Baby Emma

Patient No. 2 : A set of twins, Peter & Jane

Patient No. 3 : Cheerleader Mimi

Patient No. 4 : Teddy

We go through the medical instruments in the doctor's kit.

The doctor is ready to see the patients.

Baby Emma is first.

Teacher Agalya :

Doctor, Baby Emma is crying a lot, her body is very hot
and she's not drinking her milk.

The doctor takes a look at the baby.

The doctor brings out the thermometer strip ...

Take out your THERMOMETER, children.

The doctor exclaims :

39 degrees! This baby is having a fever!

Normal temperature is 37. Higher than 37 is a fever.

Who here has had a fever before?

A commotion broke out.

Me! Me! Me! Me! Me!

Hands of all sizes shoot up in the air.

Since Baby Emma is too small to swallow the fever medicine,
we are going to use a syringe to inject the medicine straight into her body.

Take out your SYRINGE, children.

The injection look. :D

Next patient is a set of twins.

Teacher Anne :

Peter and Jane are not well. They are coughing.

The doctor records the symptoms in the patients' files.

The doctor takes a look at the twins.

The doctor introduces a different thermometer.

The armpit thermometer.

Oh uh. It's 40 degrees. Above 37 is a ....?

"Fever!" the children shout in unison.

Yes ... Very clever all of you ...

We are going to give Peter and Jane some fever medicine
to bring down the fever ... and also some cough mixture.

The children are very engrossed in the workshop.

Next patient is Mimi, the cheerleader.

Teacher Ng says :

Mimi fell down during her cheer leading practice

and scraped her knee.

Can you see the blood?

Blood?

Instant silence in the hall.

We are going to clean her wound.

We will need some gauze and iodine.

We pick up the gauze with the forceps and fold it in half.

We pour some iodine into the kidney dish.

Very gently, we dab dab dab the skin around the wound.

We are wearing masks so that we don't spread

any germs to the open wound.

We will now cover the wound with a plaster.

There ... Mimi feels better already.

Clap clap clap.

Some children look happy and relieved, while a handful of them

look uncertain as to whether Mimi is really feeling better.

Our 4th patient is Teddy, the bear.

Teacher Eunice says :

Teddy fell down while climbing a tree and broke his arm.

Don't worry, Teddy. We're gonna fix you up.

We will need a bandage for this.

Wrap the arm with a bandage.

Cut, and put a tape to secure the bandage.

We will now make a sling for Teddy.

See? Teddy feels so much better already.

Clap clap clap.

Teacher Eunice says :

Teddy keeps rubbing his eyes too.

Okay, we will check his eyes.

This is a pen torch, children.

Wahhhhhhh ...

Ah, no wonder.

There's a tiny, little splinter in his eye.

We are going to remove it with the forceps.

There, it's done. The splinter is out.

We will apply some eye drops.

Close your eyes, Teddy.

Drop drop.

Blink blink.

There you go.

(Yup, close the eyes for eye drops. That's the tip, parents!)

Now let's check Teddy's heart beat to see if he's okay.

He had a bad fall just now.

Take out your STETHOSCOPE, children.

de dup ... de dup ... de dup ...

The children chant the heart beat,

with cheeky smiles and giggles.

Yeah, the teddy bear is fine.

You are always entitled to a second opinion.

We called 4 children for role play.

Mother Mother, I am sick ...

Call the Doctor quick quick quick ...

Alex is attending to cuts and scrapes.

He cleans the wound and applies a plaster.

Good job, Alex.

Sai is taking the patient's temperature.

The patient has a very high fever.

Here comes the syringe.

Good work, Sai.

Now, this is how you use the otoscope.

Hadassah places the instrument very carefully into the patient's ear

to check the ear canal.

Good job, Hadassah.

Alfie is using the stethoscope ...

to listen to the patient's heart beat.

Good job, Alfie.

After the workshop ...

THANK YOU DR DIANA & JUSTINE FOR CONDUCTING THE WORKSHOP.

WE ALL HAD A REALLY GREAT TIME!
